A selection of popular mountain biking trails located in the Eastern United States

Mountain biking is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Almost everywhere you go, new trails are being constructed and old fire and four-wheel drive roads have been repurposed for biking.

A Roundup of Top Bike Trails- Eastern United States

Everyone has their favorite trails; some are more adventurous rides than others. So, where to you go if you’re new to the sport or haven’t had the chance to travel and experience a variety of trails?

Southern Traverse Trail: In the heart of George Washington National Forest is a 32-mile loop with 3,000 total feet of climbing for expert riders. After an initial 1,800 foot ascent on double track you will find yourself at the beginning of an 11-mile, single track ridge ride. The descent is fast and smooth with some technical, rocky areas. The trail is open year-round but there are times of occasional snow and mountain weather. (Harrisonburg, VA)

Big River Management Area: This recreation area offers 25 miles of unmarked trails on 8,000 acres. The trails are ideal for intermediate level riders. They are not highly technical but are fun and adventurous. Due to the number of unmarked trails, it is important to be careful to not get lost! (West Greenwich, RI)

Camden Snow Bowl: A popular winter ski area which brings out adrenaline-seeking riders in the summer months. The trails here have been described as “totally insane”. Five miles of expert terrain includes an 800-foot vertical climb to the top of the lift. The single track trail is very technical. At the end of your ride, you can enjoy a swim at the boat launch. Be careful while on the trails as they are all multi-use and you are sure to encounter hikers. (Camden, ME)

Cockaponset State Forest: 30 miles of trails located on 1,500 acres of forest. There are trails available for all skill levels. The variety of terrain provides an engaging ride. Double track, single track and dirt roads, combined with some technical climbs keep enough of a challenge to keep you going. The trails are well-marked and in great condition. There is no access fee. (Haddam, CT)

Kingman Farm: Eight miles of trails on 356 acres owned by the University of New Hampshire. Clean, well-maintained trails are available for every skill level. Multiple trails branch off throughout the forest. The trails are a mixture of fire roads, single track and a tough switchback climb. (Madbury, NH)

There are too many trails to list them all, but below is a list of a few trails throughout the western and Pacific states that have been highly recommended in many circles. While this list isn’t comprehensive, it includes some popular and thrilling rides for all skill levels.
